Movie Monday: The Kite Runner
Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, The Kite Runner, has been adapted for the big screen. The film, directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster's Ball), follows two unlikely childhood friends growing up in Afghanistan. One of the boys is the son of a wealthy businessman, and the other is the son of the businessman's servant. When war breaks out in Afghanistan, the life that they know is forever changed. The Kite Runner is a story of second chances and redemption. If you haven't read the book, I cannot recommend it enough. There is time to read it before the movie comes out.
The movie was originally scheduled to be released on November 2, but the release date has been moved back to December 14. The reason for the change was because of safety concerns for three of the movie's young actors. There is a scene in the movie that depicts the rape of one of the characters. Filmmakers and the studio, Paramount Vantage, were fearful that those in Afghanistan that were culturally offended by the scene might harm the boys. So they moved the release back to give the boys time to be removed from Kabul and to be relocated to a safe place.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up. This is possibly my favorite book of the last 5 years. Hopefully, they'll adapt A Thousand Splendid Suns as well.

It is one of my favorite books also. I hope the movie can do the book justice. I've started reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, but I haven't had much time to get very far with it.

Kite Runner is one of the best books I've ever read that places the reader in the middle of current events, so moving. Read it before the movie is released.
